SEASON 12

The Simpsons' tendency to preview the future has come up in discussions online that have resulted in plenty of wild theories about the series. When an impromptu speech by Lisa about her father's better qualities went viral, its mention of Homer's integrity on the field attracted the attention of FIFA. Beset by charges of corruption across the organization, they decided it'd be a good look if someone as "honorable" as Homer served as the referee in the World Cup.

On the surface, the episode was another example of Homer's ridiculous job history and a fun excuse to include the Simpson family in one of the world's biggest sporting events. But it was also a consistently snarky episode, frequently making references to FIFA's notorious history of bribery accusations. The episode did successfully predict the World Cup final winner in Germany, though it got their opponent wrong by pitting them against Brazil instead of Argentina. It also quietly predicted the internal turmoil at FIFA as corruption scandals have erupted in the years since. Even when he learned the truth, he decided to live up to the idealized version of himself Lisa spoke of in the first place. In-universe, Homer technically worked for FIFA and was a major figure in the 2014 World Cup finals. Some fans may have been disappointed when The Simpsons failed to accurately predict the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals. Back then, the series dedicated an entire episode to FIFA that not only accurately guessed the tournament's victor, but also referenced a scandal that eventually blew up in real life.
